WHEN I PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND TRY TO TURN IT OFF, I FREQUENTLY GET AN ERROR ON THE GAUGE DISPLAY THAT SAYS "ACTION REQUIRED, SHIFT TO PARK." THIS IS VERY FRUSTRATING. WHEN THIS ERROR HAPPENS, I'M UNABLE TO POWER OFF THE CAR OR LOCK THE DOORS. I TURN THE CAR BACK ON, JIGGLE THE SHIFTER OR MOVE IT INTO DRIVE AND BACK TO PARK, AND THEN TRY TURNING THE CAR OFF AGAIN. SOMETIMES I HAVE TO GO THROUGH THIS PROCESS 5 OR MORE TIMES BEFORE THE CAR WILL POWER DOWN. THIS ERROR HAPPENS ABOUT HALF THE TIME THAT I USE MY CAR, WHICH MAKES IT A DAILY PROBLEM. I BOUGHT THE CAR USED IN OCT 2019, AND THE PREVIOUS OWNER ALSO HAD THE PROBLEM BUT I DON'T KNOW WHEN IT STARTED FOR HIM.

THE VEHICLE ISSUES A MESSAGE TO MOVE THE GEAR SHIFTER INTO PARK (SHIFT TO PARK) MESSAGE EVEN WHEN IT IS ALREADY IN PARK. THE VEHICLE WILL NOT ENGAGE NOR WILL IT ENABLE THE DRIVER TO TURN THE VEHICLE OFF WHICH RESULTS IN UNSAFE DRIVING CIRCUMSTANCES AND STRANDS THE DRIVE IN UNTENABLE SITUATIONS. THIS IS KNOWN IN SOCIAL MEDIA AS THE "SHIFT-TO-PARK" PROBLEM WITH VOLT AND OTHER GM VEHICLES WHILE GM IS HUSH-HUSH ABOUT THE ISSUE. THERE ABSOLUTELY NEEDS TO BE A RECALL ISSUED FOR ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES AS THIS IS CLEARLY A MANUFACTURER DESIGN ISSUE GIVEN ALL OF THE PROBLEMS DRIVERS ARE HAVING. IT STARTS AS AN INTERMITTENT PROBLEM AND CONTINUES TO GET WORSE OVER TIME WITH OUT ANY WARNING.

UPON STARTING THE CAR (AFTER SITTING IN THE SUN WITH WINDOWS UP, SO HOT CABIN), WHEN I SHIFT TO ANY GEAR OUT OF PARK, I GET AN ACTION REQUIRED SHIFT TO PARK MESSAGE. THE SHIFTER WILL GO TO DRIVE, FOR EXAMPLE, BUT PRESSING THE GAS PEDAL DOES NOT MOVE THE CAR, AND I HAVE THE MESSAGE TO SHIFT TO PARK. THIS HAS HAPPENED TWICE. BOTH TIMES I ROLLED DOWN WINDOWS, AND TRIED TURNING THE CAR OFF AND BACK ON AGAIN TO RESOLVE THIS. AFTER SEVERAL ROUNDS OF THIS, THE CAR DID SHIFT TO DRIVE AND WOULD GO. HOWEVER THE ENGINE IS RUNNING (RATHER THAN ONLY ELECTRIC, AS I USUALLY OPERATE); THE BATTERY GAGE IN CLASSICAL MODE SHOWS A RAPIDLY DECREASING CHARGE, THEN INCREASING, THEN DECREASING - ALSO THE PLACE WHERE IT SHOWS HOW MANY MILES LEFT IN BATTERY IS GREYED OUT AT 0, EVEN THOUGH THE BATTERY MAY APPEAR TO BE CHARGED MORE THAN HALF. ALSO, WHEN TRYING TO SHIFT MODES, HOLD MODE IS GRAYED OUT AND I CANNOT ACTIVATE IT. ONCE I ARRIVE AT MY DESTINATION AND TURN THE CAR OFF, PLUG IT IN, NEXT TIME IT TURNS ON AS NORMAL. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON FOR ALL THIS, AND DOES NOT TURN OFF WHEN RESTARTING A FULLY CHARGED BATTERY THE NEXT DAY.

PURCHASED A 2107 VOLT PREMIER WITH 40K MILES IN JULY 2020. MY WIFE WAS DRIVING THE CAR AND IT LOST POWER ON THE FREEWAY WITH A "SHIFT TO PARK" WARNING AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. SHE WAS ABLE TO GLIDE OVER TO THE SHOULDER AND I CAME TO RESCUE HER. AFTER REPEATED ON OFF CYCLES I GOT THE CAR TO MOVE A COUPLE OF MILES WITH SEVERAL "JERKING" MOTIONS WHILE DRIVING THEN IT DIED AGAIN AND I LOST POWER BRAKING (WENT TO MANUAL ONLY). THIS TIME I WAS UNABLE TO "RE-BOOT IT" AND HAD ONSTAR HAVE IT TOWED TO A LOCAL CHEVY DEALER WHO HAS A "CERTIFIED EV SPECIALIST"

I PURCHASED MY USED 17 CHEVY VOLT 2 MONTHS AGO. SUDDENLY MY CAR STARTED HAVING INTERMEDIATE ISSUES OF SHOWING "SHIFT TO PARK" WHEN THE VEHICLE IS CLEARLY IN PARK MODE. WHEN THIS OCCURS THE VEHICLE CANNOT BE SHUT OFF. I HAVE ATTEMPTED TO CONTACT GM BUT THEY CLAIM THERE ARE NO RECALL OR SERVICE BULLETINS FOR MY VIN/VEHICLE. THERE ARE COUNTLESS ONLINE COMPLAINTS FROM 17 VOLT OWNERS SHOWING THE SAME ISSUE (THIS IS ALSO OCCURRING WITH OTHER GM MODELS & I AM ALSO SEEING SIMILAR COMPLAINTS ON THIS SITE). GM IS FULLY AWARE OF THIS DEFECT & HAS ONLY ISSUED SERVICE BULLETINS ON SOME VIN # - WHILE THEY SHOULD HAVE CAUSE - BASED ON NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS - THAT THIS IMPACT IS OCCURRING WITH THE MAJORITY OF 17 VOLTS. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE WHEN A 3,794 LBS VEHICLE CANNOT BE SHUT OFF. I AM ASKING THAT NHTSA ISSUE A RECALL IN REGARDS TO 2017 CHEVY VOLTS & THE "SHIT TO PARK" ISSUE. WHILE THIS IS AN INTERMEDIATE ISSUE AND SOME DAYS MY CAR SHUTS OF FINE WHILE OTHERS IT TAKES MOVING THE SHIFTER BACK BETWEEN GEARS IN ORDER FOR THE ELECTRICAL COMPONENT TO RECOGNIZE IT'S PARKED - I WILL TRY TO CONTACT MY LOCAL DEALER FOR HELP BUT I AM FILING THIS COMPLAINT TO PUT GM & NHTSA ON NOTICE REGARDING THIS WELL KNOWN DEFECT THAT IS NOT BEING ADDRESSED AND COULD BE A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. GM SHOULD DO THE RIGHT THING AND ADDRESS THIS ISSUE WHICH IS WELL DOCUMENTED - BY PROVIDING A RECALL. THE CAR SHOWS A MESSAGE ON THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER THAT SAYS SHIFT TO PARK EVEN THOUGH THE GEAR SHIFT LEVER IS ALREADY IN PARK. THIS FAILURE TO DETECT WHEN THE GEAR SHIFT LEVER IS MOVED TO PARK PREVENTS THE CAR FROM SHUTTING OFF AND LOCKING. SOMETIMES CONTINUOUSLY WIGGLING THE GEAR SHIFT AND REPEATEDLY SHIFTING TO OTHER GEAR POSITIONS AND BACK TO PARK CAN SOMETIMES GET THE VEHICLE TO RECOGNIZE IT IS IN PARK. THIS SITUATION OCCURS INTERMITTENTLY WITHOUT A PATTERN. VERY FRUSTRATING. AND DANGEROUS.

ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS (INCLUDING AFTER ALLEGED REPAIR), THE VEHICLE REQUESTED TO BE PLACED IN PARK WHILE MOVING. ON TWO OCCASIONS WHEN PLACED IN PARK THE VEHICLE SHIFT LOCK ENGAGED AND COULD NOT BE SHIFTED OUT OF PARK. ON ONE OCCASION THE VEHICLE SURGED WHILE DRIVING PRIOR TO REQUESTING TO BE PLACED IN PARK. ON ALL OCCURRENCES, THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT SHUT DOWN AND ENTERED A CONTINUOUS REBOOT CYCLE WHEN THE START/STOP BUTTON WAS PRESSED, INCLUDING WHEN TOWED.
