THE TRANSFER CASE IN OUR 2011 MAZDA CX-9 FAILED AT 130,000 MILES. I UNDERSTAND THAT MAZDA KNOW ABOUT A DEFECT AS TO THE PROXIMITY OF THE TRANSFER CASE TO THE EXHAUST. THE HEATED TRANSFER CASE LUBRICANT BECOME SLUDGE-LIKE AND CAUSES THE CASE TO FAIL ALSO AFFECTING THE TRANSMISSION SPLINES. THE HEATED LUBRICANT ESCAPED AND DRIPS ON THE EXHAUST AND FILLS THE VEHICLE WITH A TOXIC SMELLING GAS AND APPARENTLY CAN LIGHT ON FIRE. THE TRANSFER CASE FAILED WHILE DRIVING MAKING GETTING OUT OF TRAFFIC DIFFICULT. MAZDA ISSUED A BULLETIN IN 2014 EXTENDING THE WARRANTY TO 7 YEARS OR 90,000 MILES BUT DIDN'T INFORM ANY OF THE CUSTOMERS OF THIS PROBLEM. THERE IS NO SERVICE SCHEDULE FOR THE TRANSFER CASE AS RECOMMENDED BY MAZDA. OR ANY WAY I UNDERSTAND TO CHANGE THE LUBRICANT IN THE TRANSFER CASE. WITHOUT INFORMING US OF THE ISSUE OR HAVING RECOMMENDED ANY PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE MAZA CAUSED A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION FOR MY FAMILY. I HAVE CONTACTED MAZDA USA AND THEY HAVE BEEN UNHELPFUL.

TRANSFER CASE FOR MY MAZDA CX-9 HAS GONE BAD FOR THE THIRD TIME SINCE I HAVE OWNED THIS VEHICLE. MOST RECENTLY THE TRANSFER CASE WAS BURNING CAUSING A POWERFUL SMELL WHICH WENT THROUGH MY ENTIRE HOUSE. THE SMELL WAS SO BAD THAT I ACTUALLY CALLED THE FIRE DEPARTMENT TO VERIFY I DID NOT HAVE NATURAL GAS LEAK. THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH THE CX-9 AND DEFECTIVE TRANSFER CASES. MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP HAS ASSISTED ME AND TRIED TO REDUCE REPAIR COSTS AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. HOWEVER, MAZDA REFUSES TO FULLY COVER PART WHICH MOST LIKELY CAUSED MY TRANSMISSION FAILURE AS WELL IN AUGUST 2018.

AWD TRANSFER CASE UNIT FAILURE THE TRANSFER CASE OF MY 2012 MAZDA CX-9 FAILED WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT CRUSISING SPEED CREATING A DANGEROUS SITUATION. THE FIRST SIGN OF FAILURE WAS A HEAVY BURNED OIL ODOR. THE ODOR WAS CAUSED BY A LOT OF OIL POURING OVER THE EXHAUST PIPE WHICH ALSO WAS A DANGER OF FIRE. AFTER INSPECTION MECHANIC FOUND THAT THE TRANSFER CASE HAD A LEAK AND THE COUPLING SPLINES BETWEEN THE TRANSMISSION AND THE POWER TRANSFER CASE AND THE RIGHT DRIVESHAFT WERE EXTREMELY CORRODED, THIS CORROSION WAS NOS EVIDENT FROM OUTSIDE BECAUSE EITHER THE TRANSMISSION AND THE TRANSFER CASE ARE MADE OF ALUMINUM AND THE DRIVESHAFT IS INSERTED THROUGH THE POWER TRANSFER UNIT INTO THE TRANSMISSION, BUT FOR UNKNOWN REASONS, THE TRANSMISSION OUTPUT AND TRANSFER CASE INPUT PARTS WHICH ARE MADE OF STEEL ARE BADLY CORRODED AND GOT SEVERELY WORN WITH A LOT OF RUST ACCUMULATION IN PLACE, WHICH IN TIME WILL CAUSE A TRACTION LOSE THAT WOULD SEVERELY COMPROMISE DRIVING SAFETY. MAZDA ISSUED A BULLETIN TO ADDRESS THE POWER TRANSFER CASE UNIT BUT IS LIMITED TO 7 YEARS OR 90000 MILES WHICH IS A LOW MILEAGE FOR A PROBLEM LIKE THIS TO DEVELOP AND WHEN THE OWNER TRIES TO TAKE ACTION MAZDA WILL NOT COVER THE REPAIRS. I THINK THI IS A MANUFACTURING QUALITY CONTROL ISSUE SINCE ITS COMPLETELY BEYOND THE ACTIONS OR FAILURE OF THE OWNER TO FOLLOW A PROPER MAINTENTANCE SCHEDULE SINCE THE OWNERS MANUAL DOESNT SAY ANYTHING ABOUT IT. IF WATER PUMP FAILS THE ENGINE WILL SHUT DOWN WITHOUT WARNING OR ANY TYPE OF CHECK ENGINE LIGHT OR ALERT. COOLANT WILL FLOOD CRANKCASE IMMEDIATELY AND RUIN THE ENGINE . THIS OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING CREATING A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE POTENTIALLY CAUSING A COLLISION.

I WAS DRIVING MY 2011 MAZDA CX-9 AND THE CAR WAS SMELLING LIKE IT WAS BURNING AND THEN IT SOUNDED LIKE A PILE OF ROCKS BEING TOSSED AROUND I PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND SOMETHING EXPLODED THE CAR CAME TO AN ABRUPT STOP AND SMOKE CAME FROM UNDERNEATH THE HOOD. I HAD IT TOWED TO A REPAIR SHOP AND WAS TOLD THE TRANSFER CASE WENT OUT AND MESSED UP THE TRANSMISSION. AFTER DOING RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET I FOUND OUT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM THAT MAZDA HAS KNOWN ABOUT FOR SOME TIME AND HAS FAILED TO NOTIFY THE CUSTOMER. THIS PROBLEM HAS APPARENTLY CAUSED VEHICLES TO CATCH FIRE WHILE DRIVING. AFTER CONTACTING MAZDA THEY SAY THEY EXTENDED THE WARRANTY TO 90,000 MILES BECAUSE OF THIS PROBLEM BUT HASN'T NOTIFIED THE OWNERS OF THE VEHICLE. MAZDA SAYS IT HASN'T BEEN RECALLED BECAUSE IT ISN'T A SAFETY ISSUE (WHICH I DISAGREE WITH, IT COULD CAUSE GREAT HARM OR DEATH) AND IT HASN'T BEEN REPORTED ENOUGH. MAZDA SAID THEY WOULD REPLACE THE TRANSFER CASE BUT NOT THE LABOR OR TRANSMISSION. I BELIEVE THIS SHOULD BE RECALLED SINCE APPARENTLY IT'S HAPPENING IN ALL CX-9 VEHICLES BETWEEN CERTAIN YEARS. IT'S A DEFECTIVE PART, NOTHING I DID AND I AM LEFT TO PAY TO FIX A PROBLEM THAT MAZDA KNOWS IS THEIR FAULT. MY CAR HAS BETWEEN 90,400 AND 90,500 MILES AND I SHOULDN'T BE HAVING THIS KIND OF MAJOR PROBLEM WITH A VEHICLE UNDER 100,000 MILES. IF I WOULD HAVE BEEN DRIVING DOWN AN INTERSTATE AT 70MPH I HAVE TO WONDER IF I WOULD HAVE HAD AN ACCIDENT WITH INJURY OR IF MY CAR WOULD HAVE CAUGHT FIRE WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED. AS I WAS DRIVING HOME, THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO SLOW DOWN AND SOON CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP, EVEN AS I CONTINUED TO PRESS THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL, ALL AS THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO RUN. AT THE SAME TIME, I NOTICED A BURNING OIL ODOR. THIS SUDDEN DECELERATION AND STOP OCCURRED IN THE MIDDLE LANE OF A MAJOR CHICAGO-AREA TOLL ROAD ON A COLD AND RAINY FRIDAY EVENING. A POLICE OFFICER WHO ARRIVED AT THE SCENE WAS UNABLE TO PUSH MY CAR OUT OF DANGER WITH HIS CAR. FORTUNATELY, THE CAR WAS TOWED AWAY TO A MAZDA DEALER BEFORE AN ACCIDENT OCCURRED. THE DEALERSHIP TECHNICIAN CONFIRMED THE PROBLEM AND FOUND THAT THE TRANSFER CASE HAD OVERHEATED, LOST ALL ITS FLUID, AND SEIZED. THE TRANSFER CASE WAS REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY. THE FAILURE OF THE TRANSFER CASE AND SUBSEQUENT SUDDEN DECELERATION PUT ME IN GRAVE DANGER, AND SUCH A FAILURE IS UNFORGIVABLE FOR SUCH A NEW VEHICLE. I FEEL THAT HAD THE TRAFFIC ON THE EVENING OF THE INCIDENT NOT BEEN AS HEAVY, AND THUS SLOW AS IT WAS, I VERY WELL MAY HAVE BEEN REAR-ENDED BY ANOTHER MOTORIST. I URGE THE NHTSA TO CLOSELY TRACK ANY OTHER INCIDENTS CONCERNING SEIZED TRANSFER CASES IN MAZDA CX-9S--THIS IS POTENTIALLY A VERY DANGEROUS DEFECT. *TR

WHEN I GOT IN THE CAR, THE CHECK TIRE PRESSURE LIGHT WAS ON. STOPPED AT A SERVICE STATION AND HAD THE TIRES CHECKED: ALL WAS FINE. A FEW MILES LATER, THE CAR SUDDENLY MADE A LOUD WHINING NOISE AND THEN LOUD BANGING NOISES AND THE CAR FELT LIKE IT WAS SEIZING AND SHUDDERING. PULLED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, COULDN'T SEE ANYTHING AMISS UNDER THE HOOD. RE-STARTED THE CAR AND HEADED HOME WITH THE LOUD WHINING NOISE UPON ANY ACCELERATION. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP THE NEXT DAY AND HAD IT TOWED TO THEM AS I FELT IT WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH AND NOTING THE SYMPTOMS WERE SIMILAR TO WHAT OTHER VEHICLE OWNERS HAD REPORTED AS A TRANSFER CASE FAILURE. UPON EXAMINATION THE DEALERSHIP DID SAY IT WAS A TRANSFER CASE FAILURE AND REPLACED IT THAT DAY. I PICKED UP MY CAR TODAY AND SO FAR IT IS DRIVING AND HANDLING FINE. SEVERAL MONTHS PRIOR TO THE VEHICLE FAILURE I HAD NOTED A VERY, VERY FAINT WHINING NOISE WHEN MY SPEED WAS BETWEEN 30 AND 40 MPH. I HAD MY MECHANIC (NOT THE DEALER) TRY TO EXAMINE THE NOISE WHEN HE DID MY ROUTINE 30K MILE SERVICE. THE NOISE WAS SO FAINT HE WAS NOT ABLE TO DETECT IT. HE WASN'T ABLE TO FIND ANY MAZDA SERVICE BULLETINS THAT INDICATED A PROBLEM TO EXAMINE FURTHER. BESIDES THAT FAINT WHINING NOISE THERE WERE NO OTHER INDICATIONS SUCH A DANGEROUS VEHICLE FAILURE WAS GOING TO OCCUR, AND THE CAR CHECKED OUT FINE AT THAT 30K ROUTINE SERVICE. NOT SURE WHY THE CHECK TIRE PRESSURE LIGHT CAME ON IMMEDIATELY PRIOR TO THE FAILURE BUT THE DEALER SAID THEY "RESET" IT WHEN THEY REPLACED THE TRANSFER CASE. THE DEALER WAS VERY PROMPT AND PROFESSIONAL IN THEIR RESPONSE AND TREATED US VERY WELL. BUT I DO FEEL THIS ISSUE IS SO SERIOUS WE SHOULD HAVE RECEIVED NOTICE FROM MAZDA WITH A REQUEST TO GET THE TRANSFER CASE EXAMINED EARLIER. *TR

CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO VEHICLE FIRE CAUSED BY TRANSMISSION/TRANSFER CASE FAILURE. *SMD THE CONSUMER STATED THE BOTTOM OF THE VEHICLE CAUGHT ON FIRE, IT WAS PUT OUT BEFORE ANY EXCESSIVE DAMAGE WAS DONE. THE CONSUMER STATED PRIOR TO THE FIRE, THE VEHICLE STARTED VIBRATING AND WHEN SHE ATTEMPTED TO DRIVE, IT WOULD NOT MOVE.
