THIS IS A COMPLAINT ABOUT BALL-JOINT FAILURE IN TESLA MODEL 3 CARS. PLEASE NOTE THAT I HAVE USED THE VIN OF ANOTHER TESLA TO FILE THIS COMPLAINT SINCE THE VIN OF THE CAR IN QUESTION IS UNAVAILABLE. MANY OWNERS ARE COMPLAINING ON THE FORUMS THAT THEIR STEERING IS CREAKING AND THEY ARE RESORTING TO DIY REMEDIES SUCH AS PEELING BACK THE RUBBER BOOT ON THE TOP BALL JOINT AND SQUIRTING IN LUBRICANT. THERE HAVE BEEN MANY CASES WHERE THE BALL HAS EVENTUALLY WORN DOWN AND POPPED OUT OF THE SOCKET. HERE IS A THREAD DISCUSSING THIS AND THE OWNER HAS INCLUDED A PHOTOGRAPH SHOWING THE SEPARATED BALL JOINT. I PULLED OVER AND FOUND THAT SIDE OF THE CAR TO BE RESTING ON THE TIRE. I THOUGHT THE AIR SUSPENSION HAD GONE OUT IN THAT AREA, BUT AFTER HAVING IT TOWED, WE FOUND THE BALL JOINT TO HAVE FAILED. AFTER LOOKING ONLINE, I AM THANKFUL IT WASN'T MUCH WORSE. IF YOU GOOGLE WHOMPY WHEEL SYNDROME, YOU'LL SEE PLENTY OF STORIES WHERE AN ACCIDENT ENSUED AND LOTS OF DAMAGE FOLLOWED. NOW I'M JUST INTERESTED TO SEE WHAT THIS WILL COST TO FIX. GUESSING I SHOULD HAVE THE PASSENGER SIDE REPLACED, AS A PRECAUTION, AS WELL. "WHOMPY WHEELS" IS A TERM COINED AND PERPETUATED BY A LUNATIC LIVING IN AUSTRALIA.THE PICTURES ASSOCIATED WITH THAT PHRASE WERE TAKEN FROM RANDOM PICTURES THE GUY FOUND WHILE TRAWLING THE INTERNET, THAT IS NOT TO SAY PEOPLE HAVEN'T HAD SUSPENSION ISSUES, BUT "WHOMPY WHEELS" IS FUD AND THEREFORE NOT A LEGITIMATE SOURCE OF INFORMATION.**** THERE ARE MANY TESLAS SHOWING UP IN THE JUNKYARDS WITH THIS EXACT SAME FAILURE. WHEN I TEST DROVE THE TESLA MODEL 3, THERE WAS AN OPTION TO TURN REGENERATIVE BRAKING TO LOW. THIS ALLOWED THE CAR TO HAVE MORE OF A COASTING EFFECT WHEN ONE LIFTS THE FOOT OFF OF THE ACCELERATOR. WHEN I RECEIVED DELIVERY OF THE CAR, THE ABILITY TO REDUCE THE REGENERATIVE BRAKING EFFECT WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE REMOVAL OF THIS FEATURE IS BEING DISCUSSED AT LENGTH IN ONLINE FORUMS. THE LATEST VERSION OF THE OWNERS' MANUAL STATES THAT REGENERATIVE BRAKING IN THE STANDARD SETTING COULD CAUSE THE CARE TO LOSE TRACTION IN WINTER CONDITIONS AND THAT DRIVERS SHOULD SELECT THE LOW SETTING. BY REMOVING THIS ABILITY, TESLA, BY ITS OWN ADMISSION, HAS DECREASED THE CAR'S SAFETY IN WINTER CONDITIONS. A RAPID DECELERATION OF A CAR ON SLIPPERY ROADS IS ALMOST GUARANTEED TO INDUCE A SKID AND MAKE THE CAR DIFFICULT OR IMPOSSIBLE TO CONTROL. I FIND THIS EXTREMELY CONCERNING. TESLA NEEDS TO BRING THE FEATURE BACK, OR PUBLICIZE OTHER COMPENSATIONS THAT MAY HAVE BEEN MADE UNBEKNOWNST TO OWNERS. I TOOK DELIVERY OF THE CAR ON 12/24/20, BUT ACCORDING TO ONLINE FORUMS THIS SEEMS TO HAVE HAPPENED STARTING IN OCTOBER OF 2020. A SIDE COMPLAINT WOULD BE THAT TESLA DOES NOT UPDATE THE OWNERS MANUAL IN A TIMELY MANNER TO COINCIDE WITH THE MANY SOFTWARE UPDATES. THE ABOVE EXAMPLE IS JJUST ONE OF MANY, SINCE THE CURRENT MANUAL MAKES A RECOMMENDATION THAT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO DO IN THE 2021 MODEL 3 REFRESH.

JUDGING BY THE FACT THAT THE PASSENGER SIDE AIR-BAGS HAVE NOT DEPLOYED AND THAT THERE IS NO BLOOD SPLATTER ON THE DASHBOARD IT LOOKS AS THOUGH THE PASSENGER SEAT WAS UNOCCUPIED. THIS IS VERY FORTUNATE. TURNING NOW TO THE PROBABLE CAUSE OF THE CRASH, THE FRONT SUSPENSION IS IN PIECES. THE STEM OF THE LOWER BALL-JOINT HAS SNAPPED AND SO HAVE MOST OF THE OTHER GIBLETS. THE TIRE HAS HAD ALL THE TREAD WORN OFF. THE TREAD ON THE OTHER TIRES IS IN GOOD CONDITION. GIVEN THE KNOWN WEAKNESSES OF TESLA BALL-JOINTS AND CASTINGS THAT ARE THE SUBJECT OF A RECALL IN CHINA IT IS A NEAR CERTAINTY THAT THE SUSPENSION FELL TO BITS CAUSING THE TIRE TO BE SHREDDED AND THEN THINGS WENT FROM BAD TO WORSE. WHY DON'T YOU FOLLOW THE LEAD OF CHINA AND GET THESE JUNK-HEAPS OFF THE ROADS? YOURS IN DISGUST. KEEF

FRIDAY JUNE 26TH, 6:00 P.M. PUBLIC ROADS. SUNNY, DRY. SOMETHING SNAPPED WHILE DRIVING 5 MPH AT THE MOMENT I STARTED A SLOW LEFT TURN. THE CAR LURCHED TO A HALT. THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL WAS ANGLED LEFT AT ABOUT A 35 DEGREES, WHILE THE LEFT WHEEL POINTED STRAIGHT. TESLA SENT A FLAT BED. THE TRUCK TECHNICIAN REPORTED BY PHONE THAT THE WHEEL WAS SEPARATED FROM THE SUSPENSION AND A TESLA BOLT WAS AVAILABLE FOR HIM TO TEMPORARILY HOLD ALIGNMENT FOR SAFE LOADING. I UNDERSTAND HE LEFT A NOTE AND THE BOLT INSIDE THE CAR. I BELIEVE THE BOLT WAS PART OF THE BROKEN SUSPENSION. THE CAR HAD 3,300 MILES. DURING MY OWNERSHIP, I NOTICED A LIGHT CLICKING (OR CLUNKING) WHEN THE CAR PASSED OVER A 3 INCH CHANGE IN ROAD ELEVATION, SUCH AS OCCURS DURING REPAVING WHEN STRIKING A MAN HOLE COVER OR NEW LAYER OF ASPHALT. I TOOK THIS TO BE A PECULIARITY OF THE TESLA SUSPENSION COMBINED WITH THE 18 INCH WHEELS. THE SOUND WAS RARE, AS MOST ROADS ARE QUITE SMOOTH AND I MADE IT A POINT TO DRIVE SLOWLY OVER SUDDEN BUMPS. MORE RECENTLY, AS OUR TOWN IS REPAVING, I HEARD THE CLICK MORE FREQUENTLY. ON FATHER'S DAY, WHILE A FRIEND WAS TEST DRIVING THE CAR, HE BEING A CAR GEEK, HEARD THE CLICK, CALLED IT A "CLUNK," AND TOLD ME TO GET IT LOOKED AT. I HAD NOT YET MADE THE APPOINTMENT WHEN SOMETHING SNAPPED ON JUNE 26TH. OVER THE WEEKEND I LEFT VOICE MAILS AND SENT TO TESLA SERVICE AN EMAIL STATING TESLA SHOULD CONSIDER GIVING ME A REPLACEMENT VEHICLE, BUT I WISHED FIRST TO HEAR THEIR REPORT ON WHAT HAD OCCURRED. TESLA SERVICE IN MILFORD IS NOT OPEN ON WEEKENDS. TESLA CALLED ON MONDAY AFTERNOON SEEKING MY INPUT ON WHAT HAD OCCURRED. LATER THAT DAY THEY REPORTED IT APPEARED TO THEM THAT A CRITICAL BOLT HAD NOT BEEN WELDED ONTO THE SUB-FRAME. TESLA SERVICE IN MILFORD ORDERED A NEW SUB-FRAME, PART NUMBER 1044521-00-R, FROM CALIFORNIA. TESLA IS RESEARCHING WHAT OCCURRED.

THE DRIVER WAS INVOLVED IN A FATAL ACCIDENT IN WHICH THE AUTO-PILOT AND/OR LANE-ASSIST FEATURES FAILED, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO TRAVEL OUT OF ITS LANE AND INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC WHILE TRAVELING WEST ON OSCEOLA POLK LINE ROAD EAST OF SULLIVAN ROAD IN FLORIDA. THE TESLA THEN COLLIDED WITH A VEHICLE IN ONCOMING TRAFFIC, KILLING THE DRIVER OF THE TESLA. FLORIDA HIGHWAY PATROL AND OSCEOLA COUNTY FIRERESCUE INVESTIGATED.

THE AUTO STEER IN MY TESLA MODEL 3 FAILED TODAY WHEN THE CAR WAS TURNING ON A CURVY DOWNHILL ROAD. I BELIEVE IT'S BECAUSE THE LANE MARKINGS ON THE RIGHT SIDE ENDED JUST BEFORE THE CURBING STARTED. THE CAR SUDDENLY TURNED RIGHT AND HIT THE CURB BRUSHING THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A FATAL ACCIDENT IF I HADN'T TAKEN OVER. AUTO STEER TECHNOLOGY IS NOT YET READY FOR USE ON ALL THE ROADS AND IT SHOULD NOT BE INCLUDED BY DEFAULT IN ALL THE TESLA MODELS. MY CAR DID NOT BRAKE BECAUSE THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS STILL ON. I AM STILL IN SHOCK AND AFRAID TO USE THE AUTO STEER AGAIN.
