THE CAR INTERMITTENTLY BUCKS/CHUGS WHILE DRIVING AND THEN STALLS. ALL THE LIGHTS FLASH ON. IT IS DIFFICULT TO RESTART. IT HAS HAPPENED ON THE HIGHWAY AND LOCAL STREETS. IT ALSO IDLES VERY ROUGH WHEN AT STOPS OR IN PARK AND SHUDDERS LIKE IT WANTS TO STALL - SOMETIMES IT DOES. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR 2 MONTHS NOW. THE FIRST TIME, I WAS STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT AND IT STALLED CREATING A HAZARDOUS SITUATION. MY MECHANIC HAS ATTEMPTED TO FIX IT AND THEN HE HAS TAKEN IT TO THE LOCAL SUBARU DEALERSHIP WHERE IT HAS SPENT ALMOST 2 MONTHS OFF & ON WHILE THEY "FIXED" IT. THEY GIVE IT BACK AND IT IS BACK TO THEM WITHIN A WEEK WITH THE SAME ISSUE. THE LAST TIME THEY REPLACED A MAP SENSOR AND SOME WIRING. THIS IS HAZARDOUS AND THE VEHICLE IS UNSAFE. IT FEELS LIKE THEY JUST KEEP CLEARING OUT THE ERROR AND GIVING IT BACK TO ME.

THE CAR THEN NEEDS TO BE RESTARTED AFTER PUTTING THE VEHICLE IN PARK THEN TURNING THE KEY TO RESTART, AS VEHICLES ARE COMING QUICKLY FROM BEHIND. THIS COULD BE A POTENTIALLY DEADLY VEHICLE FAILURE AND NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED AND RECALLED. IT STARTED ABOUT A WEEK AGO AND CONTINUES TO HAPPEN.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 SUBARU OUTBACK. WHILE DRIVING 25 MPH, THE ENGINE STALLED WHILE APPROACHING A STOP LIGHT. THE CONTACT APPLIED THE BRAKES AND THE VEHICLE STOPPED. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE AND REVERSE OUT OF TRAFFIC. THE CONTACT DROVE THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER (JOHN HOWARD SUBARU, 1730 MILEGROUND RD, MORGANTOWN, WV 26505) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE TRANSMISSION FAILED. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE VEHICLE COULD BE REPAIRED UNDER THE WARRANTY EXTENSION. THE NEXT DAY, THE DEALER CALLED AND STATED THAT SINCE THE VEHICLE HAD A NEW TITLE, IT NO LONGER COULD BE REPAIRED UNDER THE WARRANTY EXTENSION. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AT 1-800-782-2783 AND DID NOT ASSIST. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN. *TT UPDATED 8/22/18*JB

2010 SUBARU OUTBACK 2.5L CVT AUTOMATIC 126,000 MILES. CAR WILL UNEXPECTEDLY SHUDDER THEN ENGINE WILL QUIT AT LOW RPMS EITHER COMING TO A STOP OR UPON INITIAL ACCELERATION FROM A STOP. SYMPTOMS MIMIC A MANUAL TRANSMISSION CLUTCH SLIPPING/STALLING. ENGINE OPERATING TEMPERATURE HAS NO EFFECT, NOR VEHICLE TURNING, OR VARYING ELECTRICAL LOADS. THIS IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS SITUATION AS IT CAN HAPPEN WHEN PULLING OUT INTO TRAFFIC OR IN HEAVY TRAFFIC (FOR EXAMPLE) AND IT HAPPENS REPEATEDLY, UNEXPECTEDLY AND RANDOMLY. I URGE THE NHTSA IN THE STRONGEST POSSIBLE TERMS TO ISSUE MANDATORY RECALL AND REPAIR ORDER AS SOON AS POSSIBLE TO PREVENT LOSS OF LIFE AND SERIOUS INJURY. I AM AWARE OF MULTIPLE COMPLAINTS OF THIS PROBLEM. SUBARU HAS ISSUED TSB 16-90-13 WHICH ADDRESSES FAULTY PART REPLACEMENT IN TRANSMISSION TORQUE CONVERTER WITH A NEWLY REDESIGNED PART. HOWEVER, TO MY KNOWLEDGE, OWNERS ARE NOT BEING NOTIFIED OF THIS SERIOUS SAFETY SITUATION, NOR IS SUBURU REPLACING THE PART FREE OF CHARGE IF THE DRIVETRAIN WARRANTY HAS EXPIRED.I HAVE BEEN QUOTED $1200-$ 2000 DOLLARS FOR REPAIRS BY SUBARU. IT IS MY CONCERN THAT SINCE THE PROBLEM IS INTERMITTENT AND EXPENSIVE TO REPAIR, EVEN IF THE OWNERS ARE NOTIFIED BY A VOLUNTARY TSB, THEY MAY NOT GO TO THE EXPENSE TO HAVE IT REPAIRED, RESULTING IN POTENTIAL LOSS OF LIFE AND INJURIES. THIS NEEDS TO BE A MANDATORY RECALL. AS AN ASIDE, I AM AN AIRLINE CAPTAIN AND A FAA CERTIFIED MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN WITH OVER 40 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE IN MAINTENANCE RELATED SAFETY ISSUES, AND IT IS MY OPINION THAT THIS SITUATION REQUIRES URGENT ACTION ON BEHALF OF NHTSA AND SUBARU. WHILE DRIVING THE ENGINE SUDDENLY DIED. LUCKILY WE WERE ON A LIGHTLY TRAVELED ROAD AND WERE ABLE TO PULL OFF TO THE SIDE. THE ENGINE WOULD START, RUN FOR ABOUT ONE SECOND, THEN DIE. WHILE WAITING ON A TOW TRUCK, A GEARHEAD-TYPE FRIEND THAT I HAD CALLED TO TAKE MY WIFE HOME ARRIVED, THOUGHT ABOUT THE PROBLEM A BIT, AND UNPLUGGED THE MAF SENSOR. THE ENGINE RAN GREAT. IT TURNED OUT THAT A DEFECTIVE AIR FILTER HAD ALLOWED DEBRIS TO CLOG THE SENSOR. MY COMPLAINT IS THAT AN INVALID READING FROM A NON-CRITICAL SENSOR SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO PULL THE ENGINE FUEL/AIR/TIMING PARAMETERS SO FAR OFF THAT THE ENGINE WILL NOT RUN. OBVIOUSLY THE ENGINE COMPUTER KNOWS APPROXIMATELY WHAT THOSE VALUES SHOULD BE SINCE IT RAN GREAT WITH THE SENSOR DISCONNECTED. SENSOR READINGS BEYOND WHAT WOULD REASONABLY BE EXPECTED SHOULD BE IGNORED. WE WERE LUCKY THAT WE WERE ON A COUNTRY ROAD WHEN THIS OCCURRED. HAD WE BEEN IN THE MIDDLE LANE OF A BUSY FREEWAY, OR DARTING ACROSS FOUR LANES OF BUSY TRAFFIC, THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A DISASTER. *TR

ONLY AFTER NATIONAL AIRBAG RECALL DID SUBARU RECOGNIZE CONCERN AND ADDRESS. SUBARU RECENTLY HAS SERVICED AIRBAG TWICE. BOTH TIMES, SHORTLY AFTER SERVICE DASH WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED: AIRBAG, CRUISE, CHECK ENGINE. ALSO, ERRATIC CRUISE FUNCTION AND ENGINE CLICKING NOISE (MOVING, ALL ROADS) RESULTED. FOR NUMEROUS WEEKS, SUBARU HAS BEEN REFUSING TO FIX LETHAL AIRBAG/S AND REMEDY DAMAGE/CONCERNS RESULTING FROM AIRBAG SERVICE. SUBARU SEEKS PAYMENT FOR DIAGNOSIS (AND PRESUMABLY, SUBSEQUENT SERVICE) OF AIRBAG AND RELATED DAMAGE/CONCERNS AND A WRITTEN WAIVER FOR THIS SERVICE AND ANY FUTURE SERVICE NEEDS AS CONDITION OF SERVICE. BRAKES RUSTING, SQUEALING, SPONGINESS. WEEKS BEFORE WARRANTY EXPIRED SUBARU DISMISSED ISSUES. WEEKS AFTER WARRANTY, (AT SOME 25K MILES) SUBARU SOUGHT TO SELL SOME $1900 IN NEW BRAKES OR NEW CAR. SUBARU RELENTED MONTHS LATER, ADDRESSING CONCERN. THEREAFTER, FOLLOWING THE NATIONAL BRAKES RECALL, SUBARU REPORTED NO SERVICE NEEDED ON SECOND FULL SET OF BRAKES. THIS MONTH REPLACED 4 ROTORS (AND PADS)'THIS IS THE THIRD TIME 4 ROTORS INSTALLED ON ORIGINAL-OWNERSHIP CAR WITH SOME 65K MILES. ENGINE'S LOUD RATTLING, GURGLING. SUBARU EVENTUALLY ADMITTED AND SERVICED HEATSHIELD DEFECT. SUBARU HAS STATED REPEATEDLY HEATSHIELD ISSUE CAN'T BE RESOLVED. AFTER THREE SERVICES, SUBARU REPORTED RELATED ENGINE DAMAGE: OIL LEAK AND CATALYTIC. CHRONIC HEATSHIELD AND RELATED DAMAGE/CONCERNS ONGOING. WINDSHIELD INTERIOR POOLING WATER AND ICING (NEEDING SCRAPING OFF DESPITE WINTER-PACKAGE WINDSHIELD HEATING), AS WELL AS EXTERIOR WINDSHIELD SEAL SLIDING FREELY. ONLY AFTER SHIELD SPONTANEOUSLY CRACKED DID SUBARU RECOGNIZE ISSUES AND ADDRESS.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 SUBARU OUTBACK. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE'S TEMPERATURE GAUGE WAS ABNORMALLY HIGH AND THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AND MORE COOLANT NEEDED TO BE ADDED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED HOWEVER THE VEHICLE OVERHEATED WHILE DRIVING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO ANOTHER DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE BOTH HEAD GASKETS HAD BLOWN, THE RADIATOR WAS CRACKED, AND THE WATER PUMP HAD MALFUNCTIONED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 72,000.

SEATBELT, SHOULDER RESTRAINT IN PLACE ON DRIVER. ONCOMING DRIVER IN MID-SIZE TO LARGE TRUCK LOST CONTROL AT HIGH SPEED, CROSSED CENTER LINE AND IMPACTED SUBARU HEAD-ON, OFFSET TO LEFT SIDE OF OUTBACK & 2010 OUTBACK WAS TOTALED. SUBARU AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. IMPACT INTO FRONT LEFT SIDE, CRUMPLED HOOD UP TO WINDSHIELD, WHICH SHATTERED. HIS HOOD WAS INSIDE SUBARU ENGINE COMPARTMENT, REMAINED UNDER SUBARU HOOD ALONG WITH OTHER PARTS OF HIS VEHICLE AFTER VEHICLES WERE TOWED. SUBARU RADIATOR WAS PUSHED IN AT APPROX 45 DEGREE ANGLE, LEFT WHEEL BENT INWARDS, LEFT FRONT BUMPER GONE BACK TO TIRE AND MUCH MORE DAMAGE. HIS AIRBAGS DEPLOYED AND SUBARU'S DID NOT. SUBARU DRIVER HIT HEAD, KNEES, SHINS ON INTERIOR PARTS OF SUBARU: BLACK EYE, FOREHEAD HEMATOMA, INDENTATION & SCRAPED, KNEES/SHINS BRUISED AND SCRAPED PLUS BACK/NECK PLUS MORE SCRAPES/BRUISES AND CONCUSSION. THANKFUL THAT HIS TRUCK STOPPED UP AGAINST DRIVER SIDE DOORPOST AND DIDN'T ENCROACH INTO DRIVER COMPARTMENT BUT UNBELIEVABLE THAT SUBARU AIRBAGS DIDN'T DEPLOY. 5'6" & APPROX. 135 POUNDS. FIRST OF OUR SUBARUS TO BE IN A CRASH AND HAD NO IDEA AIRBAGS WOULDN'T DEPLOY. *TR
